The group was formed pretty much dead in the middle of recording ASTRA “The Black Chord”, the highly-anticipated follow up album to 2009’s The Weirding, with a live date already booked for late June 2011. To recreate this music live, Brian would obviously not be able to do it on his own, and enlisted several of his favorite local musicians and band mates in other groups to form the “Brian Ellis Group”. On these albums, Brian played virtually every instrument to create the illusion of a large live band.

On his own, he has released 3 solo albums, Free Way and The Silver Creature (on the now defunct Scottish electronic label Benbecula Records), and more recently the album Quipu on Parallax Sounds UK, which received very positive reviews from magazines like UNCUT, Classic Rock presents PROG, The Wire, Shindig, and Rock-A-Rolla, as well as blog sites like ProgSphere, Sound and Color Vibration Society, The Silent Ballet, The Organ, TomeToTheWeatherMachine, and FreqZine.
